Freedom to Celebrate: July 4th Family Traditions

Today is the 4th of July. I hope you are enjoying your freedom to celebrate this holiday with your family and friends. Do you have special traditions, or activities you do every year?

We have a barbecue with whoever can come over, and the just last year we started setting off our own little fireworks show in the street, including sparklers for the kids. They especially love this new tradition.

Our favorite foods to eat for this holiday, are watermelon, cherries (freshly picked straight from a backyard tree), potato salad, macaroni salad, hot dogs, hamburgers, steak, green salad, and fresh pies. Apple and cherry are the favorites. With lemon merengue a close second. Ice cream and whipped cream are offered as well. Sound good?  (Ask me after my third helping…)

We enjoy family board games, so the kids bust some out and we’ll play for awhile before it gets dark enough to do fireworks. Our favorites at the moment are the card game Uno, Ticket to Ride, Sorry! and  Apples to Apples.

Water games are also fun, if the weather is hot enough. My kids love the Slip N’Slide, a sprinkler or water balloons. If you live near a lake or river, you can go out for a “family float” and enjoy cooling off together.

Whatever your traditions, I hope you include a big helping of Celebration and Thanks, for the freedoms we enjoy here in America.
